Normally, we stay out of the fashion squabbles but we just couldn’t pass this one up. It’s really a fashion first!
It seems that the former Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley, known for his capes and caftans, has long claimed that it was “he” who introduced Michelle Obama to designer Jason Wu – and with that claim – he has drawn a line in the sand!
He has announced that he will not provide fashion advice to the beautiful and feminine first lady Melania Trump (as if anyone cared what he thinks about Melania Trump or any other high fashion ladies of our time).
His sharp remarks and the idea that he, “Andre,” could say whatever crossed his mind and fell out of his mouth explains why he is no longer at Anna Wintour’s side. His verbal droppings often lingered in the air like so many pieces of misplaced Limburger.
Anna Wintour, (affectionately referred to as the true icon of global fashion offers fashion advice to Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers and their wives. Wintour has advised a smattering of American presidents as well. Talley’s unfettered impolite remarks would often stun Vogue guests and employees into silence.
It has been forty years since the White House has had a First Lady who wore fashion and flair like a second skin as did Jacqueline Kennedy, until now. Melania Trump needs little assistance as she has a remarkable sense of taste and absolute haute couture.
What Talley’s associates have not told him, is that they brought him into his lofty society position “because they had to” not because he offers the best or even good fashion advice.
He says he’s chosen not to provide any fashion tips to what he refers to now as “Trumpland.”
His case is similar to when Sophie Theallet (whom crafted dresses for Michelle Obama) penned an open letter to Melania Trump published by the New York Times stating that she would not provide fashion or design for the beautiful Melania Trump.
Theallet actually thought she was a necessary feature to the fashion industry or that the world would be lacking somehow without her “craftsmanship.”
Having grown up in the garment industry, I don’t ever remember her name being mentioned by any designer – not ever.
And as an adult, again, a Theallet clothing line does not come to mind when I think ‘haute couture.’
Theallet didn’t improve her business with that statement at all – au contraire. She’s found that serious people with serious finances have walked away from her.
She had thought she’d be made famous by having had her statement published in the New York Times inviting other designers to join her when in fact, things went the reverse for her.
No one of Melania Trump’s status is interested in Theallet designs (and certainly not Melania Trump herself). Let’s face it, if you ‘want’ a Theallet dress it means your body ‘needs’ confinement of sorts (not a compliment).
Now, Andre Leon Talley, this humorous faux stylist, accompanied our First Lady Melania Trump to Paris long before anyone knew she would one day become the future “First Lady.” She was deciding on pieces for her wedding trousseau.
Melania chose a Dior creation and Talley it now turns out, was an invited yet undeserving guest to that 2005 ceremony since only 19 years later he’s behaving so poorly.
What Talley’s friends haven’t had the heart to tell him is that Melania was doing him a favor – it was not the other way around.
Being able to say he aided Melania Trump (now the First Lady) with her trousseau, that he had known her for decades and was one of her couturier’s would have given Talley tremendous fashion currency that would have provided vital long lasting clout to his business.
Instead, like a typical man mocking female characteristics, he has cut off his nose to spite his face.
Now he only gets to say that he has dressed hip hop artists, the likes of Mariah Carey, any of the Kardashians or even Rhiana.
Talley’s circle has not had the heart to tell him the truth, that he is a source of entertainment at their soirées.
People literally whisper cute little things like, “What do you suppose ‘she’ll’ wear tonight?” Then roar with laughter when he sashay’s in the door wearing yards of cordura.
No one actually takes him seriously but they won’t confront him because he complains that he’s not accepted for one of any number of reasons and is known to throw public tantrums and will pull one of several ‘cards’ he can play.
The American First Lady, Melania Trump needs no help or advice from Talley.
Just consider how he dresses himself. He’s so colorful and you can’t take your eyes off him but not because his outfits are attractive but because he’s tall and wide and loves wearing velvet open toe shoes, high heels and all sorts of ridiculous attire (for a man his size).
Fashion shows are routinely featured in the dark so that the runway and the moving outfits are resplendent in the spotlight as the model walks the.
Talley, has been known to completely ruin many a fashion show by draping himself in yards of white silk or satin giving him the look of an overdressed Buddha, seating himself in the front row next to the diminutive Anna Wintour.
His outfits suck the life out of the show by drawing all the lights and attention to himself and away from the actual models displaying the fashion line.
Why fashion designers don’t put their foot down and protest that boorish behavior I’ll never know. It’s not like he can affect a new line anymore. He’s a leftover vestige of old Studio 54 curiosities.
He should simply be banned from taking away attention from fashion.
He often adorns his shoes with diamond-like encrusted crystal buckles and he’ll wear yards of fur any time of the day or year.
